An Apology to Breed Ban Enthusiasts
We are sorry you are frightened of our dogs and are trying to have them killed because you think that they are “pit bulls”.
We are sorry you lack the understanding of our breed's true history, gentleness with people, wonderful temperament, intelligence and behavioral conformation. We are sorry you will not read the American Temperament Test Society (ATTS) statistics regarding our breed's true temperament, putting it in the top four for temperament, scoring better than the breeds that are accepted and beloved by media and politics such as Golden Retrievers, and Cocker Spaniels.
We are sorry that you side with and protect animal abusers by marking the breed of dog, and not the irresponsibility of the owner. We are sorry that by your logic an individual could steal a car, run some people over with it and then you can blame the make of car for the accident, as that person walks free.
We are sorry you generalize these breeds of dog with one group of people. We are sorry you can not see the love and determination that many often highly educated, non-criminal and "normal" types of people show towards these breeds in particular and the great personal sacrifices that they make to take care of their dogs responsibly.
We are sorry you can not go into the shelters, and in particular in the pre-destruction facilities and see the hundreds of abandoned and abused dogs of of so-called “pit bull-type” appearance, dying only for the insane "crime" of being born with just some exterior features that are used against them to stigmatize them as evil. We are sorry you can not see the look of disappointment in their eyes as someone walks by their kennel, refusing to even consider adopting them based on an ill educated fear mongering reporter. We are sorry that you can not be there when the animal looks at a human for the last time, and in spite of betrayed by all humans they have met, their tail still wags as someone at last approaches it, even if that someone does so with an euthanizing syringe.
We are sorry you can not be there to rescue “pit bull” puppies from a plastic bag in a dumpster, dumped there by someone switching their illegal and inhumane activities to another, more lucrative breed.
We are sorry you can not understand the difference between canine and human aggression, in the way that these breeds can. Yes, we are implicating that in this sense a so-called “pit bull” is far superior to you.
We are sorry that the medieval witch-hunting seeds of intolerance, generalization, and racism make you feel the need to vilify and successively genocide certain dog breeds in a way that resembles that applied during for instance the holocaust in Germany, but was also applied in other settings through human history.
We are sorry that justice, equality, tolerance, common sense are all things you say you hold dear (and you should!), and thus also expect from others, but do not yourself offer them towards a dog of alleged “pit bull-type” nor to its caregiver. We are sorry that you do neither take the constructive time to petition changes against generalizing racism encoded in Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) and its resulting genocides, nor stand on the barricades to enforce changes in the criminal code that would deal out serious punishment to the real animal abusers.
We are sorry you can not see the disappointed look on a puppy's face when the people petting it quickly frown, swear to it’s owner and walk away when you tell them it is of a race that has been a target of the media terror. We are sorry you feel the need to terrorize our families and our dogs for crimes we never have and never will commit. We are sorry you neither know what it is to live in fear, nor empathize with families living in fear of our dog's safety from hysterical and mentally unstable people trying to inflict all manner of horrendous evil upon our dogs.
We are sorry our media censors and refuses to print the breed name “pit bull” or “pit bull-type” of dog when in connection with a positive act such as saving a person or child from a burning house/drowning/wild attacking animals; serving in some of the best life-saving Search and Rescue groups; serving as extraordinary human-friendly registered therapy dogs that bring a world of joy to another misunderstood, neglected demographic in our society, the senior citizen, etc.
We are sorry you can not see a “pit bull” kiss a child, step carefully over a baby, pup or kitten playing in a sunbeam. We are sorry you can not wake up in the morning to feel a warm “pit bull” cuddled next to you in bed, and know that you are its entire world, and even if the house caught fire and trapped you, those loyal eyes would stay with you to the end.
But, now that we really think about it, we are not at all sorry you do not own a dog of the so-called “pit bull-type”— because at this time in your life you do not deserve one. Wake up, open your heart without subjectivity, it is not too late yet.
There will come a moment when you have the chance to do the right thing.
